Imams from across Victoria attended a workshop on Family Violence & Family Law.
The good turn out of Imams proved that the Muslim Leaders are against family violence and doing what ever it takes to deal with this area of trouble in the community.
After the introductions, Sheikh Mohamad Nawas SALEEM discussed the problem of family Violence and conveyed to other Imams some facts and statistics related to the issue.
After that the Imams were addressed by a representative of the "Say No to Violence" group, Mr ....................................., who explained the different ways that help was available.
Then followed a presentation by a lawyer, Mr ......................................... who explained that the area of family law is very complex because it is the grey are of the law. Depending on whether a crime is involved or not.
Lastly, the Imams listened to a presentation by Senior Constable Ali Gurdag. Senior Constable Ali Gurdag explained how police respond to calls about domestic disputes and domestic violence. He also explained other areas of concerns the Imams had.
The Imams had a chance to ask all speakers any questions they had and a translator was present to ensure that all Imams understood the information being presented.
It was a successful gathering and commitments were made to take this further and develop a handbook on how to deal with Family Violence and how to get help.
